The Aquarium #10 by Julio-Lacerda The Aquarium #10 by Julio-Lacerda
Although not related to Sawfish (Pristiformes) nor Sawsharks (Pristiophoriformes), the Buzz-Saw Shark, also known as Spiral-Saw and Whorl Shark, gets its name for it's peculiar teeth arrangement used to crush soft-bodied prey such as squid, making the shelled Ammonites with which it shares it's tank relatively safe.

I just noticed, this looks kind of like the "official" look for Helicoprion they found out about recently. ^^

very cool work. it looks so accurate since you used a caribbean reef shark to form it.

Not sure how I missed this one, always wondered what he'd look like from the fossils... Love the detail of the ammonites in the back. Glad they're pretty safe.

It's not the Helicoprion I knew and grew up with.....nevertheless, you've done a great job. I'd thought initially that those ammonites were heading straight into danger.....thank heavens for them! :)

Thanks! I probably will, I decided not to include Stetacanthus on this one to make Helicoprion the main focus. But I'll be sure to include it in another illustration ;)

Really you painted this? I'm impressed. And it's a interesting alternative of the arrangement of the teeth in Helicoprion :)

Yes :) I often like to use real photographs as reference though, so in this case I used this one [link]
And this 'version' of teeth arrangement was almost spontaneous, as I was trying to apply it's anatomy to a modern shark's body I thought "well, how about this..?" and it ended up looking nice and believable! :D

Helicoprion looks much more like a believable shark in this pic than the old classic depictions ever could. Though I'm personally still a fan of the classic depiction of this awesome shark. There's a Helicoprion in my Jurassic Park list, but haven't decided what depiction to go with now that there is a new one out there.

It might look believable just because it was mostly based on modern sharks, so it ended up looking much more 'normal'. But that's just one possibility, Helicoprion lived so many millions of years ago that it might have looked much more primitive and 'original'. :)

Quite likely the case I think, we are talking about a prehistoric shark with very distinct characteristics not found in modern sharks, and also quite likely as you said might have looked more primitive and 'original' as you put it.

This thing wasn't even a shark but a chimera, so...

Recent finds have revealed this new little tidbit I am presuming, and a quick wikipedia check confirms that Helicoprion is actually a member of the family that includes chimeras, the holocephalids. Guess the old documentaries are now outdated when they listed Helicoprion as a shark.

This was a chimera that underwent convergent evolution as a pursuit predator, not a shark, so it wouldn't really look that normal.

How was it determined that Helicoprion was a chimera and not a shark?

As an idea for the aquarium, have you thought of including Nothosaurs, maybe even Tanystropheus?
