The Four-Winged Raven by Julio-Lacerda The Four-Winged Raven by Julio-Lacerda
Man, this guy was waiting to be finished since the publication of the study on Microraptor's feather colours. It really took a long time to finish because of all those wings and feathers and whatnot and I'm still far from satisfied with the final result since some parts of it look really sloppy. But, it was a matter of honour to finish this thing so here it is.

Expect some better-quality artwork soon.

Also, thanks to :icontomozaurus: for helping me with general accuracy.

This is absolutely brilliant! You know your one of the very few paleoartists who actually draw these creatures so realistically it looks like you have copied a photo of the actual thing! The way you have drawn the wing anatomy so perfectly makes me actually want to cry with happiness XD those feathers just look so real! and the pose of the creature is perfectly balanced for flight, making this picture looks EVEN MORE REALISTIC! Your officially my NEW BIG THING! THANK YOU FOR DRAWING THIS!

As asas do Microraptor eram bem finas e alongadas, mas acho que a perspectiva da imagem as faria aparentar uma forma diferente.

Much better than the official recon dude! I miss only a little bit of iridiscence, but it's still fucking great ;)

Thank you! You're rigth about the lack of iridescence; I tried to take reference on some colorful starlings, but I couldn't achieve that effect just right so I opted for a rainy setting in which, I presume, the lower incidence of light would lessen the iridescence's visibility :P

Perhaps it's not that bad it ended up not being as iridescent as intended: as a dark and ominous silhouette it works pretty well!

Really nice pose. Is the pose reffed from a bird photo? It looks familiar. (Not in a bad way of course, if it's free use then it doesn't matter.) Lovely atmosphere, as always.

Thank you! Yes, I used this photo [link] as reference since I'm quite devoid of skill when it comes to drawing complex bird poses.. I must say I prefer the pterosaurs on this regard :)

I don't mean to criticize, but I do think it's generally good practice to mention it in the description for artworks if you've substantially referenced something. You never know when an asshat will accuse you of ripping something off if you don't, and it doing so also is a good way to share CC images that other people might be interested in. :)

This drawing is quite a nice application of the photo. My one critique is that the division between the animal's two legs is a bit fuzzy, so that it's easy to mistake the legs for one single leg. Unless the light were coming sharply from the upper right, the totality of the legwings would not be in shadow, so a little more highlights on the feathers of the right leg might make the distinction easier to see.

Thanks for your suggestions! I had a hard time figuring out the lighting for the hindlegs; since crows and ravens are usually very contrast-y in their colourations, their undersides tend to be almost totally black in most photographs, but at the same time they keep their legs close to the body in flight and that makes a difference. I've quickly added some highlights, I guess it looks better now.

And you're totally right about mentioning the reference, my mistake. It's in the description now :)

I often forget about linking the photos I use for reference.. Not because I'm trying to hide the fact that I've used them, mind you; I always do it whenever someone asks me. I legitimately forget, especially because I avoid doing photomanips and the like (in which case I would definitely mention the original photo and the author, if possible). I know you're not trying to critizise me or anything, I just want to make that clear. But again, you're right: I'll edit the descriptions of some of my illustrations and continuing doing so in the future. :)

That's fine, there's no crime in being forgetful. And yeah, I don't mean to be harsh or anything, I'd only do that if I felt you were legitimately trying to hide it. But I do think it's important to give credit where credit is due, and if you use the work of another, you should probably at least give them a nod. :)
